Word in Hand is Sydney’s premier and most diverse performance and storytelling gig, the first Tuesday of every second month at the Red Rattler Theatre in Marrickville. Expect to see poetry, rhyme, song, movement and more by artists from across the nation and the world. Their work will light a fire under your belly and in your heart. Our next show is here.
Word in Hand is one of the longest-running poetry events in Sydney. Previously hosted at the Friend in Hand Hotel in Glebe (hence the name), the gig was handed to poet Candy Royalle in 2017 and has since curated radical & passionate performers of poetry, comedy, music, storytelling, and physical expression.

Our rotating team of volunteers make this gig happen; thank you to all involved! We're looking for more help, so get in touch if you're our next producer / friend.
The Red Rattler is a not-for-profit, artist and activist run warehouse venue and artists’ studios, operating on the support of a team of volunteers. Their partnership enables us to bring you the best in performance!
We pay our respects to the Gadigal and Wangal peoples of the Eora nation, on whose lands we work and play. We recognise they never ceded sovereignty or authority to any state or corporate entity. Those of us who are not Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander live, work and play on stolen land, born of genocide, in what is currently a white extremist state. We'd like to pay respects to First Nations storytellers in our community.
